Public Theologies of Technology and Presence

2018-03-08T02:47:03-05:00

The Institute of Buddhist Studies, with the support of the Henry Luce Foundation, invites proposals from scholars across the academic disciplines specializing in any religious traditions, theologians from all religious traditions, and professional journalists, to participate in a three-year research and journalism initiative and series of meetings addressing the impacts of technologies on human relationships.

This initiative seeks to support scholars of religion, theologians, and journalists to powerfully address a central concern of contemporary life: The ways in which technologies reshape human relationships and alter how people are or are not “present” to each other.

Sixteen scholars of religion, theologians, and journalists will receive grants of $10,000 each to support research projects and journalistic publications on technologies and interpersonal presence. Grantees will gather yearly […]

Catherine Holtmann, Director of the Muriel McQueen Fergusson Centre for Family Violence Research (MMFC) and Nancy Nason-Clark, director of the MMFC’s Religion and Violence Research Team at the University of New Brunswick, in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada invite researchers and graduate students to submit paper proposals for a workshop that will take place September 13-14, 2016.

Issues related to religious diversity and family violence are of particular importance, given the persistently high rates of family violence around the world, the us/them binary between native-born and immigrants in public discourse, and the debates concerning honour crimes and domestic violence fueled by Islamophobia.  Proposals from multiple disciplinary perspectives are welcome, including Sociology, Religious Studies, Social Work, Law, Psychology, Political Science and Gender Studies.  […]

American Academy of Religion, Sociology of Religion Group’s Call for Papers

2015-01-26T21:06:48-05:00

The Sociology of Religion Group (SOR) aims to bridge the gap between sociology of religion and religious studies. For the most part, these fields have been isolated from each other with scholars from each existing in separate departments, attending different meetings, and publishing in different journals. We believe that this cloistering has hindered the development of both fields and that only a cross-fertilization that transgresses departmental boundaries can foster progress in research. Therefore, we invite scholars from both sociology of religion and religious studies to submit innovative papers pushing the boundaries of both fields.

We are open to both panel and paper proposals across a wide range of topics of interest to both the sociology of religion and religious studies and […]

2014-06-06T23:37:18-04:00

CONFERENCE INVITATION | “The Holy in a Pluralistic World: Rudolf Otto’s Legacy in the 21st Century” | UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN | 5-6 November 2014

Rudolf Otto, author of the classic “The Idea of the Holy” (org. 1917; Eng. trans., 1923), is best known today for his analysis of numinous experience — he coined the word “numinous” — as a mysterium tremendum et fascinans. He was also one of the most important and sophisticated European thinkers of the last century to broach topics of religious diversity. This conference will examine Otto’s theoretical and practical legacy with regard to religious pluralism, with special emphasis on Abrahamic religions, a topic relatively neglected in Otto studies. Our goals are both to understand Otto in his […]
