Fichter Research Grants

In honor of Joseph H. Fichter, the ASR offers grants for research on Women and Religion as well as other topics that also figured prominently in his research.  For 2008, the secondary topic is Religion and Disaster.  Awards are made annually on the basis of competitive proposals submitted to a rotating committee of Association members. McNamara Award

The Robert McNamara Student Paper Award is given annually to the best student paper in the sociology of religion. A cash prize is awarded. ASR membership is required for consideration. Click link to join.

Paul Hanley Furfey Lecture

First given at Catholic University of America in 1974 to honor a former president, the Furfey lecture was entrusted to ASR in 1981 "to continue Furfey's tradition of excellence." It is a high point of the meeting and is published in Sociology of Religion. Recent lecturers include Rodney Stark, Robert Wuthnow, Peter Berger, and Immanuel Wallerstein.
