ASSOCIATION FOR THE SOCIOLOGY OF RELIGION
62nd ANNUAL MEETING
OMNI SHOREHAM HOTEL
WASHINGTON, DC
11-13 AUGUST 2000
PRELIMINARY PROGRAM
RELIGION AND GLOBAL CIVIL SOCIETY
As we observe the turn of "the American century" and the passing of
another millennium it is fitting that we reflect critically upon the past as we look
toward the future. Whither the centennial sociology of religion? Whither religion in
America? Whither the millenarian world religions? What role will religion play in the
formation of a global civil society? What role could religious institutions and traditions
play in the construction of an international, economically just, and more humane and
democratic social order? What will be the new church-state and mega-state tensions and
transactions of the next century? What roles will the established religions and new
religious movements play in the on-going struggle for democratic inclusion of minorities
and other oppressed groups and for the sustainability of the planet itself?
Address program corrections to swatos@microd.com.
Address program concerns to hepnerr@msu.edu. If you
do not have Internet access, voice phone the Executive Office at 727-844-5990. Corrections
must be received no later than 15 June to be included in the final program.
You are reminded that the Preliminary Program is indeed preliminary, just as it says,
hence there may be changes between this publication and the Final Program. If you are on
the program, you should plan to be in attendance for the entire meeting, in case it
becomes necessary to reschedule your presentation. If you are coming to hear a particular
presentation, you should check your Final Program as soon as you register; hence it also
behooves you to register as early in the meeting as possible.
