CALL FOR PAPERS

ASSOCIATION FOR THE SOCIOLOGY OF RELIGION

2006 Annual Meeting

Hyatt Regency Montréal – August 10-12

INTERSECTIONS: HISTORY MEETS THE SOCIOLOGY OF RELIGION . . . AGAIN

All social action, including religious behavior, unfolds in and over time, and thus features an inevitable historical dimension. But this aspect of religion has not always been acknowledged, much less given its due, in social scientific analyses. Rather, sociologists of religion too often have seemed satisfied to leave questions of precedence, sequence, and past impact to scholars who are specially trained in history. More recent scholarship in religion has departed from this pattern, however, and our 2006 program is intended to stimulate reflection and writing that will contribute to this trend.

President Kevin Christiano and Program Chair Peter Kivisto are looking for YOU!

Papers are invited on a broad range of issues in the sociological study of religion relating to the meeting theme, including but not limited to the following:

Renewed examinations of American religious history

Historical perspectives on church and sect development

"New" religious movements, past and present

History among methods for the sociology of religion

Great controversies in the historical study of religions

Religious movements as agents of historical change

Immigrant "waves" and their faiths, then and now

Changes in gendered religious life over time

Evangelicalism and fundamentalism: "Old-time" religion?

The uses of history in social theory on religion

New sources of data on the religions of yesterday

Lessons from history for the sociology of religion

Religion in Western Europe: Purely of "historical" interest?

The religious mainline as a historiographical touchpoint

Secularization: A problem of historical interpretation?

And, as always, the program seeks to include papers that address substantive, theoretical, methodological, and normative issues in the sociology of religion, even those that fall outside the formal theme.
